In its varied forms — from the mysterious brains of octopuses and the swarm-minds of ants to Go-playing deep learning machines and driverless-car autopilots — intelligence is the most powerful and precious resource in existence.

IQdb: an intelligence quotient score-associated gene resource for human intelligence PDF Versão para impressão Enviar por E-mail

Intelligence quotient (IQ) is the most widely used phenotype to characterize human cognitive abilities. Recent advances in studies on human intelligence have identified many new susceptibility genes. However, the genetic mechanisms involved in IQ score and the relationship between IQ score and the risk of mental disorders have won little attention. To address the genetic complexity of IQ score, we have developed IQdb, a publicly available database for exploring IQ-associated human genes. In total, we collected 158 experimental verified genes from literature as a core dataset in IQdb. In addition, 46 genomic regions related to IQ score have been curated from literature. Based on the core dataset and 46 confirmed linked genomic regions, more than 6932 potential IQ-related genes are expanded using data of protein–protein interactions.

Life Extension Factor Klotho Enhances Cognition PDF Versão para impressão Enviar por E-mail

In a paper just published in Cell Reports, Dena Dubal, Lennart Mucke, and their colleagues provide strong evidence that klotho enhances cognitive function, separate from its effects on aging. They started by looking at humans carrying an interesting variant of the KLOTHO gene. The variant was known to be associated with increased longevity, and the authors show that it leads to higher levels of klotho in the blood. Moreover, they show that carriers of the variant exhibit enhanced cognition, scoring higher on multiple tests of various aspects of cognitive function. The results suggest that systemic increases in klotho levels can improve cognitive function. So the authors took the experiments into mice. They found that elevation of klotho levels leads to improved learning and memory, seen in various tasks and shown not to be age-dependent. They went on to describe specific effects on synaptic function and plasticity that may account for the cognitive changes.

One of the most prominent notions concerning the interplay between intelligence and creativity is the threshold hypothesis, which assumes that above-average intelligence represents a necessary condition for high-level creativity. While earlier research mostly supported the threshold hypothesis, it has come under fire in recent investigations.
